It becomes necessary to protect the ancient monuments which were damaged or decayed by natural agencies like weathering, earthquake & lightening in the past, from further deterioration. The purpose of Conservation or Restoration of monuments is to adopt methods to protect or safeguard the important archaeological monuments from further damages and to bring these monuments back to their original glory. There are 349 State Protected Monuments of different categories under the Directorate of Archaeology, Archives and Museums of Madhya Pradesh. The conservation & restoration work on the monuments is carried out by the funds provided by State government and grants received from other sources like Ministry of Tourism & Culture, Planning Commission of India, 12th Finance Commission & other government organizations. The conservation & restoration works was carried out in most of the State Protected Monuments in the previous years. The conservation & restoration work on some important monuments was taken up in the financial year 2009-10 viz. Narwar Fort Shivpuri, Garkundar Fort Tikamgarh, Raja Mahal & Jahangir Mahal Orchha, Taj Mahal Bhopal, Jainabad ki sarai & Masjid Burhanpur, Fort Dhar,Dhar in Madhya Pradesh.
